When you hear of couponing, what comes to mind? Is it a pile full of coupons scattered all around? Is it a bunch of “hoarders”? I still remember the shame I felt when I first started couponing. Yes, shame… People snickered, stared, or rolled their eyes at me. I remember feeling like a cheap-skate, as if only a loser would be doing this. Yet I pressed on because I know it’s what I needed to do in order to help the family budget. Couponing is a not simply using coupons. It is about strategically using them. AND not just coupons but also specials and deals and… community.
Yes, couponing is about community. Not many couponers are friendly. It’s a shark-infested world out there, not just among couponers, but everywhere. Why would I teach someone else how to do my deal and risk the chance of my store running out-of-stock? Because I love to help! It really is that simple. When I teach someone else how to help themselves, I’ve taught them how to fish. Donations are great, but they’re a temporary fix. Teaching someone else a skill ensures that they will be able to help themselves AND help others! I’ve just multiplied myself! The more people helping each other, the better our community becomes!
Now, when I’m at the check out counter, people still snicker, stare, or roll their eyes when I pull out my coupons. But I don’t feel shame anymore. I know the difference I have made in our own AND other people’s budgets. I know my end goal is beyond amassing a stockpile as big as Walmart. My goal is to help make a difference in other people’s lives by helping them save money. That’s a goal worth achieving.
